Enabling Indian children to take charge of their future

Shaishav is a grassroots organisation working alongside children from marginalised communities in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India. I was really honoured to be asked by advertising agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty and The International Exchange to travel to India to witness first hand the extraordinary work this organisation does and capture the essence of it with photographs that could be used for fund raising and creating awareness.
Shaishav provide children from marginalised communities space and inspiration to work their own way out of difficult circumstances. The children they work with face all the challenges associated with slum life - child labour, child marriage, physical and sexual abuse, gender discrimination and substance abuse to name but a few. Since child labour is a deeply complex issue it needs a more grassroots, holistic approach. They help the children realise that they have a choice and to fight for it, and they also work with parents and employers to support this change. They are directly involved in all of their decision-making and in running activities. Shaishav recognise that a child who brings about change themselves will enrich not only their own life but society for generations to come. Consequently, they work alongside the children, giving them space and support to take control of their own future.
